B'Yachad Together: An Inclusive Shabbat Service

BYachadFlyerFinalIn the Bible, God states, “My house shall be a house for all peoples.”

We decided that we should live up to that commandment.
Therefore, we have created a new program called "B’Yachad Together" – an inclusive Shabbat experience.

Families with special needs will come together to celebrate Shabbat in an accessible environment designed to embrace a range of sensory, language, and learning differences.

We are proud to offer this first program on Friday May 4th, 5:30 – 7:00pm.

At Congregation (~: Chai :~) we believe that Jewish learning is a lifetime project. Judaism offers a wealth of rich, deep, sophisticated ideas which are most useful for adults. Adults make decisions about raising children, choosing careers, medical care for themselves and loved ones, where to live and whom to love. Adults need the guidance of a religious system to help them through this maze of serious choices. Adults also experience fully the deep sorrow of loss and the great joy of true love. Jewish tradition can guide adults throug these emotional highs a lows.

Adult learning at (~: Chai :~) equips our lifelong learners to face the complexity of their lives armed with Jewish knowledge. Whether taking a Basic Judaism course, or an advanced Talmud seminar, our learners come away from the experience with a greater appreciation of Judaism's profound depths, and a greater understanding of how to lead an inspired life.

Please join us at any one of our course offerings this year. Membership is not required, and many of the classes have a nominal charge or are free!

Wandering Views Film Series

North Shore Synagogue offers many opportunities for adults to continue their Jewish education.  There are many special programs during the year.  We also run regular programs and classes throughout the year.

Classes for Every Interest

North Shore Synagogue runs programs throughout the year for every interest.

Our wonderful clergy teach single and recurring classes on various topics. On top of that, many of North Shore Synagogue groups sponsors events throughout the year including lectures, performances, movies, day trips, book clubs and discussion groups. Subscribe to our newsletter to learn about events throughout the year.

Weekly Torah Study

Every Saturday throughout the year, join our community of learners as we study the Torah and develop a deeper understanding of Judaism.  Study is interactive and is usually led by a member of our clergy.  No prior study or knowledge of Hebrew is required.

Whether you attend Saturday morning or not, why not receive the Union for Reform Judaism's Ten Minutes of Torah? It's a great way to learn about topics of Jewish interest.  Sign up for Ten Minutes of Torah here.

Lunch Study

Lunch 'n' Learn with Rabbi Shalhevet

Rabbi Jaimee Shalhevet teaches text study on various subjects throughout the year.  No prior knowledge of Torah or Hebrew is needed to participate.

Various Wednesdays throughout the year at 11:30 a.m. Consult the calendar for specific dates.

Rabbi Whiman's Lunch Study

Rabbi Emeritus David Whiman continues his popular lunch study class. This year our Torah study continues in the Book of Deuteronomy with the children of Israel about to enter the Promised Land. We continue to examine the narrative as a metaphor for becoming a people and the insights our ancient texts can provide for modern living. With a little luck we may make it across the Jordan River and continue with the Books of the Prophets. Newcomers to the class are always welcome. No prior knowledge of Torah or Hebrew is needed to participate.

Various Wednesdays throughout the year at 11:30 a.m. Consult the calendar for specific dates.

Adult B'nai Mitzvah and Confirmation

North Shore Synagogue runs learning programs for adults that never had a Bat or Bar Mitzvah - whether they converted or did not have the opportunity when they were younger.  In addition to learning about Jewish rituals, holidays and customs, participants learn to read prayers in Hebrew.  They also make new friends and connections over the two year program. Classes are taught by the clergy and experienced teachers. The program culminates in a beautiful and meaningful B'nai Mitzvah service and celebration with your classmates, family and friends.

Certain years, we run an Adult Confirmation class which provides an opportunity to explore Jewish ethics, mitzvot and customs in more depth.  Confirmation classes are open to the entire community, even if you do not wish to participate in the entire program.

 Movies on a Sunday Afternoon

We show 4 to 5 movies of Jewish interest: Israeli, Holocaust-themed and American-made films about living as a Jewish person in the US.

Institute for Adult Jewish Studies

North Shore Synagogue participates in the Institute for Adult Jewish Studies which runs a wide array of classes taught by clergy and other teachers.  Information about programs, schedules, fees and registration can be found at their website, www.iajs.org

For 2017 - 2018, classes will be held on Mondays at Jericho Jewish Center starting on October 23. Tuition is just $30 for all lectures and classes. For more information, contact Carole Wolfner at 516-349-7616.  See the brochure here.
